Primary prevention of type 2 diabetes

Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Ghani

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in the Middle East is rapidly increasing to epidemic proportions. Because of the marked increase in diabetes prevalence, the chronic nature of the disease and its multiple vascular complications (e.g. retinopathy, nephropathy and cardiovascular disease), diabetes has become, not only a public health threat, but also a heavy economic burden. The aim of the study I am sugessting aims to examine the efficacy of a combination therapy with drugs that correct known metabolic abnormalities in subjects at increased risk for T2DM e.i. impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), in reducing the conversion rate from IGT to T2DM in Middle Eastern Arab subjects.
